Portugal: Local Color, Part One

by Adverb

Plan on shooting images from Porto today. We live about 30 minutes from the city (in good traffic). Hope the photographs I take over the next few days capture some of Porto's incredible beauty.

Below is a shot I took in a small town close to our village. The graffiti, "Viver e Morrer por Timor" means, "Live and Die for Timor." East Timor's struggle for independence from Indonesia didn't receive, in my opinion, the news coverage it deserved in the U.S. Portugal had and has a very keen interest in the new country due to East Timor having been a Portuguese colony (Indonesia invaded Timor shortly after Portugal stopped providing protection to the colony).

These articles provide fairly comprehensive background information on East Timor's struggle for national independence.
